Hello folks - My one year old Bitch is in need of a trim, and before I take her to a pooch parlour and come back with some horrendous haircut, I wanted to know how my Gordon should be trimmed.....I know her feet should be tidied up and the hair under her ears trimmed but is it normal just to give her an allover tidy up ?
Yes, I've just bought one after using it on the grooming course I did. I use it as a finishing touch after hand stripping or as an aid while hand stripping. It basically just removes the dead hair without cutting (as opposed to the coat king) and gives a nice shine.
I'm quite happy with it and it's probably even better for thicker, curly hair. I tried it on two Golden Retrievers during my training and they looked super afterwards. Busby's got relatively fine and short hair so it worked well and I didn't need to go through his coat with it that often. As it doesn't cut the hair I think it's quite safe :-) It's worth a try - please let me know what you think if you buy it :-)
We have one furminator in the house, but I don't use it on gordons .. It trims out the undercoat, not the uppercoat.
I use is on the beagle and my friend uses it on retired cockers, but not on the show dogs.
Also neutered dogs are very easily trimmed if you combine furminator and coat king ...
Since both devices are made for professional trimmers, I don't dare to use them on the show dogs.
Hand-trimming is really the only way to keep a gordon's coat in top-condition, but if you just want them to look tidy, both devices can be come in very handy.
I have tried out lots of things in the past year and have now actually come to like the "coatminator" (from hub international), which is from the same company as the furminator and it really only strips the dead hair, i.e. it helps with handstripping. I'm very pleased with it and it gives better results than the furminator.
I would not recommend any of these products for a Gordons coat, they are great for labradors and for pet golden retrievers and cockers but not for a Gordon.
Matt, if you fancy a trip up to Hampshire I will be more than happy to teach you all you need to know about hand stripping and presenting your Gordon Setter, you can then choose which way to look after your girl's coat. As well as breeding and showing Gordons, I am a qualified groomer, so would be happy to share my knowledge.
This is a grooming technique that removes all dead hair by hair, it is time consuming but the dogs look wonderful afterwards, I handstrip all my Gordons, the coat is always glossy because there is no old hair giving a lack lustre appearance and the coat is smooth to touch because there are no cut ends. You still need to trim the feet and under the ears.
i have a furminator but my sister use him on her irish to get the dead coat out , he is castrated , i do not use him on my gordons and also the coatking not , i handstrip
