Gordon Setters Net Room

Net Room for Gordon Setters Lovers

Hello folks - My one year old Bitch is in need of a trim, and before I take her to a pooch parlour and come back with some horrendous haircut, I wanted to know how my Gordon should be trimmed.....I know her feet should be tidied up and the hair under her ears trimmed but is it normal just to give her an allover tidy up ?

Thanks , M

are you familiar to groom your own Gordon , did you do it before?
if so i can send you a scheme that i made myself about how to groom the Gordon setter , i give workshops in grooming Gordon and Irish setter together with a friend , and we made the scheme ourselves just to help people on the way
I know there are differences between the several countries in grooming the setter , i never use clippers , but there are people who do with good results , i do everything with my siccors or fingers
if you are interested please let me know , the scheme is in Dutch but i will translate it for you , so you will get it in two languages , Dutch and English and i can send it by e mail

Hi Yvonne, that would be fantastic - we'd much prefer to do it ourselves with scissors . She's not going to be a show dog, I just want to keep her smart and comfortable . My email is mjfs@blueyonder.co.uk .

That's great, Yvonne! Can I have one too??? ;-) One tool that's only recently been recommended to me and I now can't do without is the Mars Coat King. It cuts grooming time in half and gets such great results.

Just catching up here. The Coat King is great for tidying a dog up but it does cut the coat which can make it look dull and for me is no where near as good as the laborious task of hand stripping. It may seem a lot of work but in the end the results are worth it

Yes, I have since learnt from lots of people (including a groomer with whom I did a week's grooming training) that the coat king is not really suitable. I have not actually used the coat king since (it is now available for half price - anyone? :-) ) Apologies for suggesting it here and I hope that noboby got one after my suggestion. I've come to really appreciate hand stripping and the coat looks fantastic, although it takes quite some time and effort.

I use the Coat King on my retired dogs, it keeps them smart without them having to stand around on the table for a long time. As with any grooming aid it does have it's place but as you say hand stripping does make the coat look fantastic.

i will send it soon to you , i will translate it the best i can , but there are also photo's in it so you can see it yourself , the only thing i ask you is not to send it on without my permission to do so , hope you can respect that , we put a lot of time in it to make it , hopes it helps you to groom the Gordon yourself , i also have a coatking but you have to use it carefully , it is a great instrument used correctly , but it can also damage the coat , it is ideal for a coat of a castrated dog or bitch , to strip the coat , because they are developing lots of coats
